Person who has assumed role of special prominence in society or thrust themselves into public controversy. Must prove actual malice (knowledge of falsity or reckless disregard) to recover for defamation. Two types: all-purpose (general fame) and limited-purpose (involved in particular controversy). Higher standard protects robust debate on public issues.
