False statement of fact about plaintiff published to third party that damages plaintiff's reputation. Two forms: libel (written) and slander (spoken). Requires: (1) defamatory statement, (2) of and concerning plaintiff, (3) publication to third party, (4) damages, (5) fault. Public figures must prove actual malice.
